Our client, an agri-food company, are currently recruiting for a Fermentation Manager. Role Overview: Reporting to the Research & Development Manager, looking for a passionate, self-starter who can supervise and coordinate the activities of a small team of scientists and technicians focused on fungal and bacterial fermentation processes. Responsibilities: Project management of internal research projects and group’s fermentation core service. Supervising and training a team of 4-6 scientists, across varying experience levels. Assessing different microorganisms (wild type and GMO’s) for novel enzyme production. Active management of the project pipeline to ensure resources are assigned and prioritised to deliver commercial success. Development of new enzyme fermentation processes and the improvement of current processes through process and strain improvement. Transfer of new developments to up-scaled production in accordance with the project time-lines and working within a business oriented development environment. Co-ordinating with Scientists from other R&D teams/external collaborators to generate required quantity of bacterial/fungal products within a stipulated time. Communicating complicated scientific technologies and data in a clear and simple manner. Providing high quality scientific support to team in terms of planning and execution of experiments by running fermentation batches with minimum downtime and maximum productivity. Working effectively with other team members to provide data required for presentations/validation/analysis. Develop strong partnerships with Technical Institutes, Universities and research bodies to enhance our R&D capability. Requirements. PhD in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Enzymology, Biochemistry or related discipline. 5+ years industrial research experience. 3+ years project and staff management experience. Experience in working with different capacity lab scale fermenters (0.1 to 10 L) and subsequent downstream processing. Experience in presenting technical materials in written and verbal form is critical. Experience in fed-batch and high cell density fermentation. Experience in optimising the process conditions and cost analysis. Demonstrate ability to write publications and reports that conform to prescribed style and format. Demonstrate ability to apply DOE methodology to experimental planning and strong statistical analysis to results. Willingness to travel when required for research collaboration/conferences. Science is not 9-5, so a willingness to be flexible and work during the weekend if required. The ability to work independently. Desirable: Experience in microbial enzymes production at >100 L scale. Experience in handling different groups of fungi and bacterial systems. Experience in techniques related to USP and DSP processes.
